How Do Braces Work?

Consisting of a metal bracket-and-wire system, our traditional American Orthodontics brackets help shift teeth and bites into better alignment, ensuring optimal function and aesthetics when treatment is complete. Brackets are bonded to the front surfaces of the teeth before the metal wire is threaded through them to ensure sufficient pressure is applied for continuous movement.

This orthodontic solution remains among the most popular options available, as it can address even the most complex dental cases.

Who is a Good Candidate for Braces?

Traditional braces are suitable for most children, teenagers, and young adults. Although there may be instances where early orthodontics are necessary for younger patients, these tend to provide the type of movement and realignment growing smiles need to achieve optimal results.

If you or your child has any of the following, there is a good chance you/they will be eligible for traditional braces:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Bite misalignment (overbite, underbite, crossbite, open bite)
  • Sleep-disordered breathing

Benefits of Braces

Traditional braces continue to be popular and effective because…

  • They are highly versatile, capable of correcting even the most complex orthodontic issues.
  • The results are predictable and long-lasting.
  • They are highly durable and can withstand daily wear.
  • They help correct teeth and bite alignment, allowing for improved use in everyday life. Chewing and speaking become easier.
  • They allow for improved oral health, making it easier to clean properly aligned teeth.
  • They can be fully customized based on a patient’s smile needs.
  • They can widen the dental arch to make breathing easier, allowing for better sleep at night and healthier facial development into adulthood.

Caring for Your Braces

While wearing braces, patients will need to maintain their oral health and hygiene to ensure their teeth remain healthy and appliances are not damaged. This requires brushing after every meal with a soft-bristle toothbrush for two minutes. They’ll also need to floss using a threader or water irrigator. It’s helpful to use an interdental brush to get between brackets and wires.

In addition, they should ideally avoid certain foods, such as hard, crunchy, and sticky items, as they can damage their braces or cause the brackets to become detached. They will need to attend regular orthodontic follow-up appointments so we can make adjustments and ensure everything is moving according to their treatment plan.
